2025 Wrap up
NEW OFFICE LOCATION!
We started 2025 off with our first office location! You can find us at 123 Jasper Street in Hinton. Nestled in the Green Square, we are within minutes to Hinton’s beautiful backyard, Yellowhead County and Jasper National Park!
WILDLIFE SWEEPS
This year we recorded lots of wildlife activity during our sweeps! The clues we focus on are tracks, scat, hibernacula and nests. This year we’ve seen evidence of deer, elk, moose, lynx, pine marten, snowshoe hare, bears, coyote, pileated and downy woodpeckers, and the whiskey jack!
Highlights were seeing a wolverine, caribou and cinnamon bear during our travels!
FISH SALVAGES
2025 was a busy construction year! At one site alone we caught over 7,000 minnows! All these fish are relocated upstream away from a work zone!
eDNA
This year we collected environmental DNA (eDNA) from a variety of streams for both monitoring and research purposes. Environmental eDNA is collected from streams by gathering water samples and then filtering them. The filter is then sent to the lab and analyzed for the DNA of the species of interest. eDNA is a non-invasive way to gather species specific information from a stream. This year we detected positive samples for Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, and Brook Trout.
WATERCOURSE CROSSING INSPECTIONS
Our field staff travelled over 60,000 combined kilometers to inspect more than 1000 crossings this field season! Inspections are done annually to improve watershed health through inventorying, prioritizing, and mitigating stream crossings.
CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS
This year Kally presented about Poseidon at our local high school for a grade 9 biology class! They learned about our electrofishing machine and learned about different jobs that biologists do right here in Hinton!
Kally also presented at the bi-annual EMVS Kids conference, showcasing our “Zap, Catch, Release!” presentation about trout and electrofishing to grades 4-7. They enjoyed learning about local fishing holes and what electrofishing does to save the fish!
COLLABORATIONS AND CONFERENCES
Poseidon has presented at the many conferences and collaboration events! Ngaio presented at the 2025 Alberta Native Trout Science Workshop, The Treaty and Metis Nations watershed symposium by the Athabasca Watershed Council (AWC), and the AWC Open House Hardisty Creek Hinton Community event. Thank you, AWC for the opportunities to present at both of those and inviting our field crew tree planting this past spring!
