Job Overview
Poseidon is seeking to hire motivated, safety-focused, and self-directed Seasonal Biologists to support various programs throughout the upcoming demanding field season. Seasonal Biologists work a temporary, project-based role. Early May is the desired start date, and employment will come to an end based on project schedules, weather conditions, and regulatory timelines.
The Seasonal Biologist will work 90% in the field and 10% in the office. Much of the field work will be conducted independently, with remote supervision. Due to the remote nature of the work, job seekers with first-hand knowledge of the eastern slopes are encouraged to apply. Training will be provided to promising applicants.
Minimum hours are not guaranteed, however, the Seasonal Biologist typically works 40 hours, Monday to Thursday. Work outside the Monday to Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm schedule does occur and applicants must be flexible to accommodate potential work on Fridays and some weekends throughout the season.
Seasonal Biologist Core Responsibilities
● Assessments of stream and fish habitats
● Assist with habitat assessments
● Water and terrestrial sampling for eDNA
● Preparation of reports and maps using QGIS
● On-site, field projects involving fish isolation and electrofishing
● Ongoing maintenance of field gear and vehicles
● Wildlife sweeps or wildlife observations
● Data collection to support wildlife monitoring programs
● Supporting multidisciplinary field programs as required
● Administrative tasks as assigned
● Additional reporting and project supported duties as assigned
Seasonal Biologist Physical and Environmental Demands
● Extended periods of working outdoors in variable weather
● Travel on industrial roads and remote sites
● Lifting and carrying equipment (up to 55 lbs)
● Working around water, wildlife, and heavy equipment
● Driving for extended periods and overnight field assignments
Seasonal Biologist Qualifications
● Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with clean driving history
● Education in environmental, forestry, biology, or related field
● ATV experience and ATV certification is preferred
● H2S Alive and WHMIS certifications
● GIS and database management, experience with QGIS is an asset
● One season of field experience performing tasks such as:
○ Identifying characteristics of fish habitat in the foothills and boreal region
○ Conducting fish habitat assessments
○ Conducting stream crossing inspections
○ eDNA sampling
○ Submitting permits and notifications to provincial and federal governments
○ Working and complying with relevant legislation including the Alberta Wetlands Policy, Water Act, Code of Practice for Watercourse Crossings, Fisheries Act, Public Lands Act and relevant SARA documents
○ Working on construction sites
○ Driving on industry roads
The compensation range for this role is $23.00 - $25.00 per hour. Education and experience will be considered when awarding final compensation to the successful candidate. The field season will start May 4, 2026.
