2024 Wrap Up
A YEAR IN REVIEW
PEL seasonals during field training for fish habitat assessments.
Projects from the Year
WILDLIFE SWEEPS
This year we recorded lots of wildlife activity during our sweeps. The clues we focus on are tracks, scat, hibernacula and nests, and this year we’ve seen evidence of: deer, elk, moose, lynx, pine marten, snowshoe hare, coyote, pileated and downy woodpeckers, and the whiskey jack!
PILEATED WOODPECKER NEST SEARCHES
During the winter we spent a few months continuing our search for PIWO nesting cavities. Poseidon installed wildlife cameras at 11 sites.
ATV STREAM CROSSING INVENTORY
A continuation of the 2023 pilot project, we spent months covering trails in the Hinton FMA to inventory. This year we assessed a total of 68 ATV crossings.
FISH SALVAGES
2024 was a record year for catching fish during a salvage. At one site alone we caught over 10, 000 minnows! All of these fish are relocated upstream away from a work zone.
HELI DAYS: FISH HABITAT ASSESSMENTS
Our team spent two weeks this summer doing fly-in sites.
eDNA
Environmental DNA is a non-invasive way to collect species-specific information from a stream. This year, the streams sampled tested positive for Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout.
DATA LOGGERS
Poseidon has been working alongside fRI Research’s water monitoring program for two summer seasons now and in 2024 aided in installing 59 data loggers in streams around Alberta.
